At the 2024 Two Sessions, in front of the Great Hall of the People, NPC deputy Ru Zhengang invited several experts in wheat breeding for a photo that netizens called "the most beautiful breeding dream team." They promised to break regional boundaries, share quality germplasm resources and jointly tackle core seed industry technology.

At the 2026 Two Sessions, at the same place, Ru Zhengang reunited with Yang Wuyun, chairman of the Academic Committee of the Sichuan Academy of Agricultural Sciences, and Guo Jinkao, honorary president of the Shijiazhuang Academy of Agricultural Sciences in Hebei.Their meeting gift was a handful of wheat seeds - a promise that has lasted two years.

On March 4, in front of the Great Hall of the People, Ru Zhengang excitedly introduced to his two old friends: "This is Henan's newly bred high-quality wheat seed, combining the water-saving drought tolerance of the Hebei wheat region, the disease resistance and low-light tolerance of the Sichuan wheat region, and the high yield, lodging resistance and high photosynthetic efficiency of the Henan wheat region - strong stems, large ears, more grains, more leading."

The two old friends were not to be outdone, taking out their latest "precious gifts": "I brought water-saving, drought-resistant, freeze-tolerant and barren-soil-tolerant quality seeds." "Mine are strong-gluten seeds - early-maturing, high-yielding, with excellent variety traits."

The three eagerly exchanged the wheat seeds they had brought.

Two years ago, Guo Jinkao and Yang Wuyun gave Ru Zhengang the "Malan No. 1" and "Chuanmai 98" wheat varieties they had bred. Over two years, the "Malan No. 1" seed that "went on a business trip" to Henan has produced a fourth generation after many hybrid experiments, about to enter field trial stage; Sichuan's "Chuanmai 98" has also bred new strains in Henan.

Yang Wuyun explained that the new strain Professor Ru brought this year can improve the gluten strength of Sichuan wheat. "Today's 'Chuanmai 98' is mainly used for biscuits and pastries; if you want to make noodles, you need to introduce the medium-strong gluten traits of Henan wheat into Sichuan wheat."

In recent years, these wheat breeding experts have exchanged ideas frequently."Germplasm resources must be shared - that is the key to breeding breakthroughs."Ru Zhengang noted that achievements that once took eight or ten years to breed are now achieved in two.

From the banks of the Yellow River to the upper reaches of the Yangtze, this handful of seeds traveled a thousand miles, carrying the shared conviction of China's seed industry people."Food security must be guaranteed by ourselves. The Chinese people's rice bowl must be held in our own hands. Chinese grain should use Chinese seeds - that is our confidence."

During the Two Sessions, deputies and committee members from agriculture put forward targeted suggestions on ensuring food security, advancing seed industry revitalization, strengthening farmland protection and increasing farmers' incomes, contributing wisdom and strength to forging the "Chinese core" of agriculture and advancing agricultural and rural modernization.
