03"Smart agriculture is a new production model in which intelligent, automated and digital technologies are deeply integrated into modern agriculture, and an important path for transforming traditional agriculture into a modern one," said Committee Member Zhang Ganlin, vice chairman of the Jiangsu Provincial Committee of the Chinese Peasants' and Workers' Democratic Party and a researcher at the Institute of Soil Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences in Nanjing. Based on independently developed new algorithms for characterizing the three-dimensional spatial variability of soil and selecting environmental covariates, together with high-precision digital soil mapping models, China has built a high-precision national soil information network. The Nanjing institute has also set up an integrated soil data service system enabling one-stop data sharing in support of smart agriculture.

"Developing smart agriculture calls for sustained efforts to strengthen core agricultural technology R&D," Zhang suggested. During the 15th Five-Year Plan period, investment should be increased in environmental sensing technologies and devices, intelligent decision-making for soil and crop management, and high-precision foundational data. Core technology breakthroughs should be pursued to achieve independently controllable technology applications, and representative regions should be selected to build smart agriculture demonstration zones, providing technological support and demonstration for agricultural modernization.
